Part II Begins - The Quake Medallion

Quake Medallion

Here we are in the Dark World!  What is this place?  That's what I said on my first playthrough.  The enemies are much tougher down here, even in the over-world, the soundtrack sounds tougher, and everything is darker!  What exactly happened to Hyrule?  Well, toto, we aren't in Hyrule anymore!  This is the Dark World, the product of Ganon's wish when he touched the Triforce and transmuted the Golden Land into something that would reflect his heart.  At least, we find this out later.  However, we're back at the beginning situation: we're dropped at the Pyramid of Power and all we know is that Zelda was sent here and we need to save here: but we have no idea how, we have no idea on anything related to our quest now.  This is a great element to A Link to the Past: we're half-way through the game and we still have a great deal of the plot to expose and a great deal of our goals to uncover.

First thing first is to venture around and find the Quake Medallion.  Like the Ether Medallion, it is hidden in the Dark World (though this one is being held by a giant fish, unlike the Ether which is held in a plaque).  Like the Ether Medallion, the Quake Medallion unlocks a dungeon within the Dark World.  And like the Ether Medallion, this magic proves quite useful in solving problems whether they be puzzles or enemies.  And in the Dark World, where Ganon is King, our problems are just beginning beyond just not knowing what is going on.  What I wonder is why this fish was so grumpy that we threw something at him, but then gave us valuable magic in return.  If you throw something back in, he'll get grumpy and jabber at you for disturbing his rest, and go back to it.  Not so intimidating, I think.
